The Old Beggar Woman

Description

I wanted this to look like illustrations I remembered from old chilren's books where they only had a few colors they could print. :-) This picture was based off a foggy memory of a fairy tale where a girl is blessed by an old woman when the girl gives her some of her scanty provisions. At every word, diamonds and pearls and rubies fall from the girl's lips.

Her jealous sisters seek out the old woman, but their true natures become evident when they scorn the hag's request for food. The old woman curses them so that frogs and toads and serpents crawl out of their mouths whenever they talk.

Photoshop 7, about 8 hours. Used stock for the girl [link] here.

I think you did an amazing job of recreating the old style of art. I have such a huge respect for that, because it really does look like a sliver of my childhood.

I think it might even be better without the red/yellow coloring, so it was entirely dolorous, or perhaps something with a bit less chroma so it doesn't stand out so much. But that could just be me. The detail on the girl's face is a bit out of style (too well detailed), but that could be from the stock. And the upper right background bit could give a firmer impression of what it is to better "set" the scene.

My favorite bit by far is the witch, though I'm torn between liking her eyecrinkles or obscene chin more, and the cane is a very nice touch. The girl's dress is also pretty awesome.

Thanks.
